Avon Vale Tennis and Croquet Club
Avon Vale Tennis and Croquet Club (AVTCC) is is a small, friendly club situated in the village of Avonwick in the heart of Devonshire's beautiful South Hams, a few miles south of South Brent (a town next to the main A38 road linking Exeter and Plymouth). Our five grass courts and one croquet lawn are in play from mid-April to September (depending on the weather), while our hard court is available all year. Originally founded as an archery club in 1859, the club moved to its present site in 1870. In 1875, the club resolved to introduce other sports; archery gradually declined, tennis courts were laid, and the first tennis tournament was held in 1879. We are older than Wimbledon and believe that we are the third oldest tennis club in the world still playing on its original courts (after the Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Society and the Bowdon Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club). Today the club has a membership of around 100; archery only features on special occasions, but we have a thriving programme of tennis and social events. New tennis, croquet or social members are always welcome, and visitors can play up to three times a season on payment of the appropriate fee.
For membership enquiries, please contact Membership Secretary Jane Dunn on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Or just come to one of our club sessions; you can find us on Google Maps by clicking here: SDSTL.
During the grass court season, club sessions are held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons (from 2:00 pm until dusk) and on Wednesday evenings (from about 5:30 pm until dusk). The visitor fee is £5, and you can play as a visitor up to three times in a season. Ladies' tennis sessions also take place on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 11:00 am. On Saturdays and Sundays, tea, cakes and biscuits are served from about 4:00 pm for a donation. Once-used match balls can be purchased at £2 for a tin of 4 and new balls at £4.99 for a tin of 4.
Arriving at Avonwick from Totnes or from the A38 at South Brent, take the road opposite the Avon Arms pub (leaving the garage on your left) and head towards the church. Turn left opposite the church into Black Hall Lane (signposted to North Huish). After you pass Church Walk on your right, you will find the club a short distance further down the lane through a gate on your left.
